November is National Diabetes Awareness Month!
As the holidays approach, we gear up for family gatherings, reminiscing with old friends, and gift giving! This year, consider purchasing a locket from South Hill Designs Cute Jewelry. If your November purchase includes at least one of the items above, then 5% of the whole order will go to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund). Add the Red (January Birthstone) Swarovski Crystal, Platinum Pearl (3 pack), Gold Butterfly Charm, Silver Heart Butterfly Charm, or Crystal Butterfly Charm to your order and know that you will be supporting Diabetes Awareness and the search for a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Pictured with me to the left is my cousin, Alex. He was diagnosed at age four with Type 1 Diabetes. Seeing him get sick more easily and quickly, watching him be poked countless times a day, and knowing that his parents and grandparents wake up countless times a night to test his sugar and make sure he is ok just touches what it is like to be a Type 1 Diabetic. At 5, Alex was given the opportunity to use an insulin pump, instead of having to have an insulin shot each time his sugar needed to be adjusted. One would think this would be easier, and in some ways it is. However, the insulin pump has only slightly made Alex's life a little easier. He can't just jump in the pool whenever he wants in the summer. He has to remove the pump hose and secure his pump site. Alex has to be careful playing sports, especially contact sports, because his pump hose could be ripped out. He still has to check his sugar multiple times per day. While kids his age were learning how to beat a video came level, Alex was learning how to check his own sugar by poking a needle in his finger and putting a drop of blood on a test strip. Alex was also learning how to give himself an insulin correction.
Alex is very precious to me. I pray some day there is a cure to diabetes. I pray Alex and all the other Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetics get closer to living a "normal" life. I pray no more children face diabetes at such a young age.
Please, consider placing an order in November, and add one of Cute Jewelry's designated charms to your order, so 5% can be donated to JDRF.
Have a wonderful holiday season and a very Happy Thanksgiving!
